Since the birth of her daughter Birdie Mae in March 2019, the 39-year-old mother of three has been focused on making minor lifestyle improvements to safely lose weight.

Jessica Simpson has had a difficult health journey recently, as you may or may not have heard (who am I kidding, you have heard). The 40-year-old mother of three has made headlines in recent months after losing 45 pounds and looking happier and “more at ease” than she has in a long time.

What is fascinating about Simpson’s wellness journey is that the entertainer’s approach is somewhat different from what we typically see in transformation tales. Simpson’s routine is consistent and balanced, rather than anecdotes about grueling workouts and meals the size of a thumbnail. Although there has been discussion about how much weight Simpson has lost while training with Harley Pasternak, her trainer has stated that the scales are not a priority; rather, lifestyle choices are.

I was intrigued by Simpson’s approach to diet and exercise, so I decided to give his fitness program a try. I was fortunate enough to have Ben Putland, an ACERO teacher, on hand to put me to work for this experiment. To get a better idea of what it would take to follow Simpson’s regimen, I talked with trainer and athlete Ashley Joi as well as Centre app’s certified sports dietician.

This is what I learned after two weeks of attempting the task…

Her attitude to food is Excellent.

Simpson has set a diet target of eating “healthily” five times a day (three meals and two snacks). And, although she consumed a lot of protein, fiber, and fat, she did not obey any food groups guidelines.

This makes sense, according to Center’s sports dietician, because eliminating whole food classes is not always a good idea. She explained that certain people might benefit from eliminating such foods, such as “highly processed snack foods and take-away…but there should be a balance according to an individual’s needs” for carbs, sugar, and fats.

Simpson’s diet also has an unusual feature: she does not have cheat days. Instead, when the situation calls for it, she makes “cheat meals.” Yeah, she always gets to eat cake every now and then. Ben Putland of ACERO, my experiment’s mentor, agreed with this strategy.

He told me that cheat days would lead to a negative relationship with food. “I advise my clients to eat as healthy as possible because it is beneficial to their health… However, if you want a small amount of chocolate every few days, that is fine; it is only a little more calorie-dense… It’s all about finding a balance and embracing a safe lifestyle.”

Breakfast consisted of a bacon, greens, and a slice of sourdough with avocado; lunch consisted of tuna salad; and dinner consisted of protein with veggies and probably rice. A handful of nuts or a few crackers and a small piece of cheese were popular snacks.

I never went hungry. Yeah, I did indulge in a few cheat meals.

I do not go far enough walks.

Simpson’s dedication to her everyday measures is one of the most notable aspects of her fitness routine. As has been widely documented, Pasternak began by having Simpson walk 6,000 steps per day and gradually increased this to 14,000 steps per day. I understand I do not get enough exercise on a regular basis. It is unusual for a writer who enjoys Netflix to get anywhere near the 10,000 mark, so I knew I would have a tough time.

The chance to test Fitbit’s Versa 3 watch for this piece was a big help for me. The handy little device reminded me to pace my feet on a regular basis, which resulted in me pacing up and down my kitchen while waiting for the kettle to boil. My step average went right up, even though I looked like a weirdo.

I set a target of 6,000 to 10,000 steps per day and ended up with an average of just over 7,000 steps per day for the fortnight. My highest score was 12,010 points. For some background, my daily average before this challenge was about 5,000 (oh, the shame!).

“It’s safer for your body to be involved during the day, rather than only at one moment,” Ashley Joi of Centre explained to me.

“Even though you worked out for one hour during the day, you wouldn’t get the same results if you sat all day….

So, it is lovely that she [Simpson] decided to improve her movement during the day in terms of measures. It’s also clever.”

It sounds easier than it was to do three workouts a week.

I figured that three 45-minute strength training sessions would be a breeze for someone who only exercises a few days per week. I was wrong. It took a lot of effort to get through these sessions. Every time, I burned at least 300 calories (again, thanks to my Fitbit), and each workout made me wonder if I had ever actually exercised on my own before.

Putland clarified that he had scheduled our workouts to include “an upper-body session, a lower-body session, and a whole-body session” (like Simpson). “Resistance exercise, finishing with a little bit of conditioning or cardio at the end,” he said.

He explained that by using this method, “you’ll be able to create more lean muscle,” which will allow you to “burn more calories for a longer period of time.”

And trust me when I say that I found a difference.

So, how did things turn out?

While two weeks is not a long time, people did ask if I had been exercising more during the experiment, which I found intriguing. I did not see any drastic changes in terms of description, but my stomach did look flatter by the end.

But, more importantly, I noticed a change in my mood. Because of the exercise and my walking, I would clock over two hours of ‘productive time’ on days that I practiced with Putland. It was amazing to notice how much better I felt on those days.

When it comes to fitness, I have discovered that if you do not come up with a strategy that feels long-term, you will not get very far. Simpson’s routine was designed around five principles: getting her steps in, disconnecting from technology, sleeping, eating healthy, and exercising regularly.

It was straightforward, did not feel all-encompassing, and ensured that I made healthy choices all day, every day. In a nutshell, it succeeded. Someone hurries up and get me a pair of Daisy Dukes!
